Things to do... Food & Wine: Restaurants

Baring in mind that we can only mention restaurants we know, and that places do change, here are our three categories;

Serious gastronomy:

La Table des Cordeliers (05 62 68 43 82) in Condom.  Undoubtedly our local best with a Michelin star; run by friendly Chef Eric Sampietro.

Le Relais de la Hire (05 53 65 41 59) in Francescas (15km, 13mn) is the next closest serious foodies' rendez-vous from our house.  With a 16/20 mark from 2007 Gault & Millaut restaurant guide, Chef Jean-Noël Prabonne confidently produces harmonious "cuisine du terroir" in a lovely XVIIIth century house with garden.

Hotel de Bastard (05 62 68 82 44) in Lectoure (25km, 30mn), the restaurant of Chef Jean-Luc Arnaud, is also quite a serious gourmet eating experience. The large airy terrace is excellent on hot days and the atmosphere is more informal and accessible than the interior might first suggest.  People of legitimate parentage are also welcome.

Une Auberge en Gascogne (05 53 67 10 27) in Astaffort (45km, 40mn).  Chef Fabrice Biasiolo's cooking gave us reminiscences of The Fat Duck at Bray, I will say no more...

Hotel Le Square (05 53 47 20 40) also in Astaffort (we haven't been yet as we couldn't get a table!), is the Michelin starred restaurant of Michel Latrille

Good food:

Jardins de La Baïse (05 62 68 37 00) at the Continental Hotel in Condom. Very pleasant lunching or dining experience with a garden terrace, easily surpassing expectations of its ordinary modern setting.  Run by our friend Veronique and her welcoming team.

L'Escadron Volant (05 53 97 19 04), 7 rue Henri-IV, Nérac (next to the castle).  Traditional cooking from the South-West; open for lunch and dinner every day in summer with tables outside.

Les Trois Lys (05 62 28 33 33) in Condom.  Pretty good food, but uneven service at this restaurant & hotel set in the nicest stone house ("hotel particulier") we have seen in the heart of town.

La Ferme de Flaran (05 62 28 58 22) is further away at Valence-sur-Baïse (15km/17mn).  This well-established traditional restaurant is also worth a visit, many of the locals think so too!

La Vie en rose (05 62 09 83 29) in Eauze gave us a rosy time for dinner indeed...

Hotel Chateau de Fourcès (05 62 29 49 53) with a well deserved good reputation, the restaurant at the Chateau certainly has a beautiful grand setting and very inventive cooking, but with too much sweetness for our taste.  Call to book a table outside by the river.

Good basic:

L'Origan Pizzeria (05 62 68 24 84) in Condom.  Pizzas (perfect calzone) cooked in a wood burning oven and other traditional Italian cuisine.  In a quiet narrow side street between main square and parking area - outside tables in the summer. Reservations are recommended. Run by energetic M & Mme Cano.

O Sole Mio Pizzeria (05 62 28 31 13), 49 rue Gambetta, Condom,  In the centre of the cathedral plaza, this restaurant is open later than most, but closed Tuesday evenings and all day Wednesday.

Restaurant Saint Pierre (05 62 28 44 06) in Condom.  Arguably the best location in town: upstairs in an elegant old stone house with, especially from the balcony, the best view onto the Place de la Cathédrale. Good inventive cooking with traditional ingredients.

Le Saint Romain (05 53 97 03 84) is a friendly place further north from the house on the main street in Lavardac (25km, 25mn).  It has a casual downstairs brasserie and a neat first floor restaurant room serving good traditional local fare.

Le Moulin du petit Gascon (05 62 28 28 42) in Condom off the route d'Eauze; a lovely riverside setting with terrace for this popular place by the friendly local campsite(!).  Quite booked up: a good sign...

We have tried to put together a reasonable selection and we will be adding to it from time to time, but we cannot take any responsibility for this information and suggest that if the activity is a key part of your trip then you should confirm the details with the restaurant.  We can give you more information on request and there is also more in the housebook.
