Things to do... Food & Wine: Discovery and Tasting

The region is well known for its Gastronomic fare.

Wine: You can almost stop anywhere you see one the many "Visite" or "Dégustation" signs to taste: wine, floc, pousse-rapière and Armagnac from many beautiful Châteaux! But to name the two good places you can spot from the south terrace at Escrimis-la-Chapelle and one other we've tried and liked:

  • the Domaine du Chateau de Pouypardin (05 62 68 34 77 or 06 80 02 75 97), run by Dannie and Antonin Nicollier our neighbours in Grazimis, you can see its hexagonal tower to the south-east from the house (their red "Terreforts" is our favourite Cotes de Gascogne); and

  • the Domaine de Chiroulet (05 62 28 02 21) to the south-west from the house you can also pinpoint in the distance the church in their hamlet of Heux. 

  • North of the house, and hence out of the Gers and into the Lot-et-Garonne, is the well-run visit & tasting at the Cave des Vignerons in Buzet-sur-Baise  (38km/35mn), Tel: 05 53 84 74 30.

Armagnac:

To understand more on the subject, the Musée de l'Armagnac is worth a visit, famous for its beautiful cellars in the old bishop's palace of Condom (05 62 28 47 17).  Or for visits and tasting we recommend:

  • the beautiful Chateau de Cassaigne (18km; 05 62 28 04 02)

  • Chateau de Mons (17km; 05 62 68 30 30)

  • or the world renowned Magnol (5km; 05 62 28 08 46); and, of course

  • Janneau Armagnac distillers in Condom (check for visits).

 

Markets & food fairs:

More information is available in the housebook, but the closest are:

  • Condom-en-Armagnac (7km): covered market Wednesdays and Saturday mornings; and a farmers' market ("marche paysan") on the route d'Eauze on Sunday mornings

  • Nérac (20km): Saturday

  • Montréal (17km): Friday mornings

 

Farm Products: If you want to know more about the process of making delicious foie gras and other duck meat products, visit our favourite foie gras supplier farm "La Ferme de Martin Neuf" just the other side of Condom, where Mme Perotto or her son, who have a stall at the indoor twice-weekly Condom market, will delight in presenting their happy fat ducks!  For vacuum packed whole uncooked prepared liver for pan-frying ("foie entier cru denervé") please call to order: 05 62 28 27 26.

Another local foodie "find" we will happily share with you, is our friend Francoise's unique "Miettes de Canard". She put a twist to the traditional "Rillettes de Canard" recipe making them infinitely leaner and meatier. We love her "Miettes" all year round as a cold meat or as a filling for cottage pie!
